Operation Migration has been working on building a new migratory population of endangered Whooping Cranes.
Each year the Operation Migration Team uses Ultralight Aircraft to guide young Whooping Cranes from
Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin to their wintering grounds at either the St. Marks NWR or the Chassahowitzka NWR in Florida.
The chicks in the new reintroduced population come from captive adult Whooping Cranes. Migration is something normally passed from one generation to the next, but captive cranes do not know a migration route. Operation Migration developed a method of teaching captive produced cranes a migration route, using ultralight aircraft, and after imprinting and conditioning the hatch year cranes are guided along a 1285 mile migration route through Seven states. To date there are 96 birds now migrating, after learning a new migration route by following the tiny aircraft. Operation Migration Website
